Ms. Laura Rohman is an elementary music teacher at Purefoy Elementary School in Frisco, Texas. She was involved in both band and choir throughout her early education career in middle school and high school, which she attended in Plano, Texas. She has been in the education field for 21 years, beginning as a kindergarten teacher, holding this position for 9 of these years. For the other 12, Ms. Rohman has been an elementary music teacher. Before beginning her career in education, Ms. Rohman attended Baylor University, where she was a member of the Baylor Band. After 3 years at BU, she moved to the University of North Texas, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in early childhood education, along with a minor in music.
Outside of teaching music, Ms. Rohman enjoys spending time with her three children, Jack, who now attends college at Mississippi State, Justin, who attends Wakeland High School, and Paige, a seventh grader. Both Jack and Justin are musically inclined, taking after their mother. Aside from this, Ms. Rohman also plays many instruments. She has been studying piano since she was 9 years old, and has continued to play through her years of teaching. When she is in the classroom, many students often ask her if she will play the piano for them. She also has begun to play the ukulele, and hopes to one day incorporate these into her music classroom, possibly teaching students to play these, rather than recorders. Because her fourth graders learn to play the recorder each year, Ms. Rohman also plays this instrument, in order to teach and assist her students as they learn. Finally, Ms. Rohman finds ways to help in the Wakeland High School theater arts program, and recently helped with the auditioning and casting process for their most recent production, Into The Woods.
In my search for a mentor, I went through many interviews, asking a wide variety of questions and hoping to find someone with whom I could connect and enjoy shadowing as a mentee. Ms. Rohman has provided many experiences in her music classroom that I could not have imagined being able to be a part of, and I am very excited to see where my new and upcoming experiences with her will take me.
